a peek inside the design vibe of Satellite Room

Posted on: October 24th, 2012 by rebecca

I love checking out new spots that have edge and style so when I was turned onto the 2 week old Satellite Room in DC, I was game. My husband and I stopped into the new bar for cocktails and dinner before the Kimbra show at the 9:30 Club. We’ve been loving Kimbra since way earlier in the year and listened to her during our European honeymoon in May.

When we walked into the large space, I immediately felt a cool LA-vibe. In DC? Yes. The style, decor and design reminded me of many-an-LA spot with concrete, color and good design vibes. I was immediately in love with the large neon sign (Yes, my love for neon know no bounds) and I also enjoyed spotted the use of tile (an awesome decor accent that, in my opinion, is not used nearly enough) It was a great spot and an awesome place to enjoy pre or post concert. Plus the food is grubby and good, especially the tater tots.

fall inspiration weekend

Posted on: October 13th, 2012 by rebecca

This weekend is all about fall inspiration – reds, yellows, greens, oranges. I am looking forward to venturing out and doing Skyline Drive, a 105-mile scenic drive in Virginia through the mountains and hilltops. I enjoyed a family reunion in Chicago last weekend and spent the week in DC with my loving parents. This weekend  I am ready to discover some color + style + inspiration and I think I’ll start with these awesome online places before our mini-roadtrip.

Rustic Style & Dinner at Styers Garden and Terrain

Posted on: October 1st, 2012 by rebecca

On Saturday, my husband and I ventured off for an evening in Philadelphia to catch the incredible Melody Gardot sing at the Merriam Theater. Before the show, we planned a visit to Terrain and Styler’s for dinner and for a chance to check out the landscape and design shop.

I have been a fan of Terrain for a long time. The shop’s website is awesome and full of fantastic design goods for the inside and outside of your home. (It is part of the Anthropologie brand) Inside the rustic shop there are tons of design vignettes, glass containers, florals, succulents, plants as well as books, jewelry, soaps and lotions. Outside there are string-lit paths that take you around the property where you can buy trees, outdoor furniture and more. There’s a large barn where private dinners are held as well as pockets of design moments. (Like the tent set-up – love love love this!)

After we enjoyed the shop, we had a lovely dinner in the greenhouse (yay – more string lights!) The cheese board we had to start was amazing and my husband and I enjoyed scallops and goat cheese gnoochi. After dinner we drove to the city to enjoy the soulful sounds of one of m fave singers – Melody Gardot. It was her last stop of her US tour and it was magical.

California Home & Design’s 1st Showhouse
Small Space, Big Style

Posted on: September 28th, 2012 by rebecca

Although I love living back on the east coast, I do miss Los Angeles too. I really enjoyed living in LA. I moved there in high school and lived there on and off for 15+ years. I can definitely say that LA is a place to live. You don’t get to truly experience all that LA offers in just a weekend visit. When you live in LA, you can check out all of the eclectic neighborhoods sprawled across the city, the incredible food from around the world (seriously, LA has the best authentic food and it’s super affordable too), personal style, gorgeous weather, natural colors, awesome architectural design and more.

When my sweet friend (and super fab EIC of California Home & Design), Erin Feher, launched the 1st CH&D Showhouse, a 1,400 square foot penthouse the heart of Hollywood, CA, I couldn’t wait to check out the final result and share them with you. CH&D invited local LA designers to create the unique rooms in the penthouse. I absolutely love the vibe – it’s refined yet eclectic, modern and cool. My fave space is actually the black and white striped bathroom. The small space of the bathroom is perfect for full wallpaper coverage – yes! And if you live in LA, you can check out this space yourself. Click here to learn more and visit through November 18, 2012.

SPACEStv features a 500 sq ft NYC space & more

Posted on: September 25th, 2012 by rebecca

I love seeing how other small space dwellers live. Often their homes are full of style, creativity and design statements. New and awesome youtube channel, SPACEStv, is full of inspiring (small) homes that all design lovers can enjoy. Full of original programming geared towards the savvy small space dweller, SPACEStv is a must-watch and a must-bookmark. One of their series is quickly becoming a small space dwellers go-to – Tiny, Eclectic, Amazing Spaces.

One of my fave shows in the series features Michael Pozner’s 500 square foot loft space in New York. It’s just awesome and I wanted to share it with you. Michael wanted a home that suits his everyday life and a place to share his artistic style and creativity. He also wanted his stuff to be concealed instead of just stored away.Working with a design team, a space that was full of hidden drawers and cabinets did the trick. Easy to access (hi, a drawer in each loft step) and easy to get to (an entire wall of push cabinets), this NYC space feels big and fantastic.

Click here to check out SPACEStv and all of the exciting shows and design ideas.

a fresh start for fall

Posted on: September 23rd, 2012 by rebecca

My fave season is here – fall!  Like many of you, I love the cool air, natural color palette and beautiful light. For me, with a new season, comes new and positive changes. One place that I made a small change was this little blog. I updated all of my cover photos to new pictures that I had snapped and new sayings that I feel to inspire by.

loving. living. small. is still very much my place to write, be creative, share my design ideas as well as to be inspired too. I am so grateful to many of your emails and comments about how loving. living. small. has inspired you. To be honest, I also use it for inspiration For example, my BLOG ROLL is full of amazing blogs and sites that I love to read, my A SMALL CHAT series is a place I turn to for design ideas and DIGITAL SNAPSHOT are accents and items that I want to bookmark for continued inspiration. All of this is a reminder that my house is my home and a place for me and my family to be comfortable, to relax and simply to enjoy.

loving. living. small.’s 7 picks for fall 2012
fashion & decor

Posted on: September 3rd, 2012 by rebecca

Can you believe it’s already September? The summer is flying by and I am certainly ready to leave humid and super hot days for crisp and cool ones. I love fall, especially now that I am back on the east coast. The vibe, colors and and richness of the fall season weaves through fashion, decor, food and more. I rounded up 7 colors and patterns that I am loving for fall and shared both a fashion and a decor pick to match – oh la la.

loving. living. small. picks for fall:

*Polka dots are super hot for fall but I’ve been enjoying them for about a year now. I’m completely smitten by *my fave shoe brand* Loeffler Randall’s Tasmin pumps – ponyhair and polkas – yes!

*For my nails, I typically do pink for summer and deep red for fall/winter. I am definitely going to be mixing it up with Essie’s Smokin Hot gray/purple. So awesome! And I love the West Elm Bliss chair. We actually just got this item for our small 4 ft wide office. (Yes, it fits and works – tour to come soon)

*I am also really loving denim, especially the denim button down for fall. It’s totally classic and crisp and is a great foundation piece for an outfit. Ever since I printed my own custom Heath Ceramic’s tea towels, I’ve been loving using them in our kitchen. For the denim style, I am loving this lighthouse tea towel in denim – awesome!

*I am loving blue for fall – especially pale blue. Loeffler Randall’s new handbag line is amazing and I love this Shooter bag. And I always have a throw handy in my living room – a little zig zag works for me.

*I love sparkly (in scale) and this pretty statement necklace with a touch of coral is perfect. (I would totally rock this with the denim shirt above). And how lovely is this circle mirror? A home decor statement piece itself.

*I am still (and will always be) a fan of rose gold. I love these suede light rose booties for fall and their matching decor item – rose gold candles. Totally sculptural and cool.

*Even though it seems pencil skirts are big for fall, I still only love the flirty, pleated A-line skirts. The blue and gold colors (oh, hi again blue) in this Kate Spade skirt are awesome and how cute is that bow pattern? Love it! I also love color for my coffee mugs – it just brings a smile to my face when I am enjoying a cup of joe in my home.

1. Loeffler Randall Tasmin Classic pumps  1A. Forever Lovely Design pillow cover
2. Essie Smokin Hot nail polish 2A. West Elm Bliss chair

currently loving | neon words as home decor

Posted on: August 22nd, 2012 by rebecca

I have fallen in love with neon words as home decor. Perhaps it’s the technical edge of the actual design paired with the context of the expression of the light – neon words and sayings are dynamic home decor accents. I came across this custom neon sign in a bedroom design by Laura Day and it pretty much had me at *hello*. I even was inspired to research companies that create custom neon sayings for our own small space. (This is the same company that I called – they rock!) But alas, the $1000 price tag for the 4-word saying I wanted to create forced me to place my custom neon sign idea right into my “dream file” for now. However I did start cataloging my neon word love in a pinboard right here.

A few months ago, my husband and I traveled to Europe on our honeymoon. First stop – Paris.  We enjoyed 4 days of sweetly wandering the streets, embracing the city, the sights, the food, the wine, the amour. One afternoon, my husband stopped to take some photos of the Sienne and that’s when I discovered it across the street – a large tree with something in it. I got closer and that “something” turned out to be neon light sayings. What? My dream file image come to life? I walked across the street to find the La Maison Rouge gallery (with the delicious Rose Bakery housed right inside). A neon exhibit was showing. Perfect! We popped in for an absolutely awesome experience. We enjoyed the various neon installations, colors, styles and vignettes. I just loved the whole exhibit.

I also love the last pic of my husband. I asked him to “be serious” under this particular sign – too cute! Also, in the 3rd pic, can you see both of our reflections in the Rose Bakery mirrroed window? My husband snapping away at the Sienne and me – turned towards the cafe – spotting the neon exhibit. (Another great pic for our honeymoon coffee table book we are making right now.)

Are you inspired by neon?

my 10 year anniversary of moving to NYC

Posted on: August 15th, 2012 by rebecca

Today is a really special day for me – August 15th marks 10 years (wowza, a decade) that I finally chased my dream and arrived in New York City. Growing up in a suburb outside DC, my parents often took our family up to New York to enjoy the city. To say that I had caught the NYC energy at an early age is an understatement. I loved everything about the vibe of NYC from this young age and I knew that I would live there one day. After living in LA after college for a few years, I finally decided on my birthday in 2002 that I would “be living in NYC in 6 months“. Pretty much to that exact date –  I arrived and hit the ground running.

I rented a tiny studio apartment on Sullivan Street between Spring and Prince – the heart of Soho. This small space was the inspiration for this blog - loving. living. small. I loved loved loved my 325 square foot apartment with the quintessential exposed brick wall. I know that my time living in NY was where I discovered my love of design – color, texture, architecture, lights, all of it. I remember spying some pillows in an issue of domino. I had to have them. $60 was a lot for a pillow but I was drawn to the pattern and style. I bought them and they made me smile every time I saw them. I knew then the power of feeling good in your home. I also discovered my love of taking photos when I lived in NY. I walked to and from work everyday and would take different routes. The sunlight and style of my morning route along Bleeker Street was different then my evening stroll home down W. 4th. Just streets apart in the West Village, the people, architecture, shops and restaurants that filled these NYC city blocks were fluid, spontaneous, edgy, bright, friendly, savvy and chic. I captured images of what I felt during these walks.

After three years of loving and living in NY, I was ready to move on. Of course NY would always be a very special home for me. While my friends were my NY family, my own family didn’t live there. Plus my now husband was living in a different city and our relationship was growing to a new level. I look back on my time in NY and still can’t believe the amazing things I did, how I felt, what I experienced. Just being able to navigate and thrive on the harmony and style of the city is an awesome memory. Just amazing. In the spirit of my time in NYC and the last 10 years, I roundup my 10 of my fave loving. living small. posts and series >>
